Emmy The Great “Exit Night (Live)”

I have always felt that music is an expression of people’s inner most feelings, a way to communicate on an almost transcendent level.

With that being said, Emmy The Great remains to be one of my favorite “transcendent communicators”. Why? Well, first off, Emmy does happen to be quite great, but it’s not because of her band name, or because she is stunningly beautiful (and enough emphasis cannot be placed there).

No, she’s great because there is a sincerity present in each of her songs that (somehow) doesn’t equate to complete and utter bullshit. It’s real, and seriously, what more can you ask for?

Except maybe a date.

Devendra Banhart “Angelika”

I envy Devendra for several reasons, but mainly because of that totally rad beard. No, but seriously, what is there not to like? His song’s are catchy, and have that freak-folk vibe that only freaky folk people can pull off (right?).

He also has the ability to stop a song midway, switch languages, and continue to rock it.

Pero en serio, esa barba (ver lo que hice alli?).

Vetiver “Worse For Wear”

I pretty much love everything about this song. And I’ve been writing far too much recently.

So yeah.

The Avett Brothers “The Weight of Lies”

I believe at some point in everyone’s life, there is a moment (maybe several) when you wish you could run away from everything and start anew.

This is the subject matter of “The Weight of Lies”, a standout track which appeared on The Avett Brother’s 2007 aptly titled release, Emotionalism. The overall premise of the song is simple, yet it is a concept we all must eventually come to terms with.

We cannot escape our past; it tends to follow us wherever we go.

The chorus in particular makes this painstakingly clear:

The weight of lies will bring you down
And follow you to every town
Cause nothing happens here that doesn’t happen there
So when you run make sure you run
To something and not away from
Cause lies don’t need an aeroplane to chase you anywhere

Change and progress are not external factors that can be acquired and manipulated. It comes from within.

So make peace with yourself, and then share that peace with the world, bro.

Because we need it damnit.
