Housse de Racket “1-2-3-4”

Every time I hear the first few notes of this song, I smile.

If I were in France, sure, I’d love to kickback with a single shot of espresso and a pair of tortoise shell sunglasses and feel like Gabrielle Coco Chanel herself. But a larger part of me would be more interested in the mischievous and completely unrestrained side of Paris.

So that’s why I appreciate this band. They expanded my knowledge of French music. And in addition to this, they have a good number of other blog-worthy songs including “Alesia”, “Synthetiseur”, and “Oh Yeah!”, each of which sound completely different than the last. And that makes them all worth listening to at least once.

HDR was at Coachella this year and had I gone, I would have made it a point to stop by their tent and dance like a mothereffing buffoon.

Françoise Hardy ”So Many Friends”

“So Many Friends” is a delicate ode to one of life’s most unfortunate truths: friends come and go.

But luckily, it is only through this process that we are able to determine the people who truly matter. And while that may sound somewhat despondent, it is as Françoise Hardy says, “they always leave a little of themselves behind”.

So life goes on in that curious way only life can go.

Mondialito “L’azur”

I haven’t been on a French music spree for any particular reason other than that I’ve been trying to simulate the unambiguously peaceful ambience that radiates from Parisian cafe’s (while sipping on some Starbucks instant coffee, no less), in my daily life.

I will not comment on whether or not this has been successful, but I will share a French word I learned from a good friend of mine.

“Merde”.

Which roughly translates to “shit”. So please,  go forth and spread the merde.

Air “Sonic Armada”

Despite efforts by both Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown to ban Air from the “airwaves” (yeah, I went there), the French duo has overcome all odds to release their latest LP, Le Voyage Dans La Lune (or Voyage to the Moon, for the French illiterate).

I’m glad they did.

Here’s my favorite track off the new album. It’s essentially a 5 minute long keyboard solo.

Which is totally rad.

Charlotte Gainsbourg “Me and Jane Doe”

Charlotte is an amazing singer/songwriter.

Unfortunately, the first things that pops up when you search for her on last.fm is Good Charlotte.

I don’t know about you, but a part of me dies every time I see that band’s name. Wait, I’m not a hater. I swear.

Charlotte is good. Great, even.
